Shadow AI is the use of unapproved, unsanctioned, or unmonitored AI tools inside an organization. It’s the AI equivalent of shadow IT: employees turning to convenient tools outside official channels because they’re faster, easier, or simply already on their phone.

This includes things like:

The goal is awareness, not fear.

4. Provide Approved Alternatives

Shadow AI happens when employees feel they have no safe option. Offer:

    • A simple request process for new tools

If you don’t give them a safe path, they’ll create their own.

5. Reinforce That AI Is Welcome — When Used Safely

Employees should feel empowered, not restricted. Messaging should sound like:
